Unlocking older Macs

Removing an EFI or Firmware password from a early 2011 or older Mac is relatively simple, and does not require any special tools. This should work on both EFI (Intel) and OFI (PPC) based Macs. This is a hardware based hack, so proceed with caution! We are not responsible for anything that may go wrong in the process.

Essentially, all you have to do is change the amount of system memory (RAM) and reset the PRAM or NVRAM. If you remove a memory module you can reinstall it after the lock has been removed.

To remove the lock just follow these simple steps:

  1. shut down your computer
  2. unplug your computer, or if it’s a laptop remove the battery
  3. remove one of the memory modules and put it aside, you will put it back later (do NOT touch the gold contacts; you could damage it)
  4. plugin your computer or reinstall the battery
  5. boot up the computer while holding COMMAND+OPTION+P+R (this resets the parameter RAM or NVRAM)
  6. wait for the startup chime to sound at least 3 times
  7. release the keys and shutdown the machine once you reach the login screen
  8. now if you boot up the machine you should bypass the Mac firmware password
  9. shut down your computer
  10. unplug it, or if it is a laptop remove the battery
  11. reinstall the memory module that you removed in step 3
  12. plugin your computer or reinstall the battery
  13. You can now use the machine as usual, boot from an external drive, or reformat your internal drive.

If your Mac only has one memory module installed, you can also add an extra module to accomplish the same thing.
